Emergency Grant Aid, etc., in Response to the Earthquake in Türkiye and Syria

February 24, 2023

On February 24, 2024, the Government of Japan announced an Emergency Grant Aid of USD 16 million to support Türkiye and Syria in response to the earthquake that struck on February 6, 2024. This is part of a broader emergency humanitarian assistance package totaling USD 27 million, announced by Foreign Minister HAYASHI Yoshimasa on February 16, 2024.

Japan's aid will be channeled through international organizations such as the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The assistance focuses on critical areas like shelter, food, debris removal, health, and water and sanitation for the affected populations.

Additionally, Japan is providing USD 4 million in emergency humanitarian assistance through Japanese NGOs via the Japan Platform (JPF), and has allocated USD 7 million from its FY2022 supplementary budget to the Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF).

This initiative reflects Japan’s commitment to supporting the recovery and humanitarian needs of the people in Türkiye and Syria.

Breakdown of Japan's aid:

  • Türkiye: USD 8.5 million (including USD 6 million through international organizations and USD 2.5 million via Japanese NGOs)

  • Syria: USD 18.5 million (including USD 10 million through international organizations, USD 1.5 million via Japanese NGOs, and USD 7 million for the SRTF)

Japan will continue coordinating with international organizations and countries to ensure the effective implementation of this aid.
