Announcing Reconstruction Support Through Technical Cooperation Project

On August 24, 2023, Ambassador Takahiko Katsumata, together with Union of Municipalities of Türkiye Chairman Yücel Yılmaz (also Mayor of Balıkesir) and Kahramanmaraş Mayor Hayrettin Güngör, as well as JICA Türkiye Office Director Yuko Tanaka, announced that Kahramanmaraş has been selected as the model city for reconstruction planning under JICA’s technical cooperation project “Enhancing Waste, Pollution, and Disaster Risk Management Capacity for Local Governments.” During the announcement, they also discussed future reconstruction efforts.

This project, the first under the Japan-Türkiye Technical Cooperation Agreement signed last year, was expanded to include reconstruction support following the earthquake that struck southeastern Türkiye on February 6, 2023. In addition to supporting the formulation of a reconstruction plan, the project will provide expertise in seismic retrofitting of public buildings and disaster waste management. Through this support, it is expected that Türkiye will achieve "Build Back Better," while further strengthening the friendship and cooperation between Japan and Türkiye.
