Emergency Response Plan in the Middle East and North Africa Affected by Humanitarian Crises" (in Cooperation with UNICEF) (Unofficial Translation)
February 26, 2024
On February 23 (local time February 22), in New York, USA, an exchange of letters was held between Ms. Mitsuko Shino, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, and Mr. Ted Chaiban, Deputy Executive Director for Humanitarian Action and Supply Operations of UNICEF, regarding a grant aid of 1.82446 billion yen for the "Emergency Response Plan in the Middle East and North Africa Affected by Humanitarian Crises."
In the Middle East and North Africa region, in addition to the Syrian crisis and worsening Palestinian situation, major natural disasters such as the February 2023 earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, the September earthquake in Morocco, and floods in Libya have severely deteriorated humanitarian and security conditions. In this context, improving access to urgent services such as education and protection for vulnerable populations, including children and youth, has become a pressing issue.
This cooperation aims to improve humanitarian conditions in four countries and one region—Syria, Turkey, Palestine, Morocco, and Libya—by providing support in education, protection, and sanitation for vulnerable people affected by earthquakes, floods, and conflicts.
